Helaire Repeats

Rodney Helaire has done it again! After winning The World Natural Bodybuilding Federation World Heavyweight Title last year, Helaire returned to New York City two weeks ago to defend his title. Helaire, 40, successfully defended his title and became the repeat heavyweight champion for 2008.
“It hasn’t sunk in yet,” said Helaire over the phone from a photo shoot in Canada. “Winning it for the first time was great, but winning it a second time was even better.”
Any repeat championship is impressive in its own right, but Helaire’s repeat may be even more impressive for a couple reasons. The obvious is that when you’re number one, everyone is gunning for the champ. And two, Helaire had not competed once in 2008 because he was busy opening his new gym - RH Fitness in Pooler.
“It’s been a busy year,” said Helaire. “It makes my win that much more rewarding.”
Helaire took his confident, yet humble winning attitude to the stage against 13 people in his class at Manhattan’s Martin Luther King High School, and proved yet again that his lifestyle is the key to his success. “Most people do six to 12 weeks of dieting for one show,” said Helaire last year. “My routine doesn’t change. This is a lifestyle for me. I diet and train the same all year long.”
The same was true this year.
“Every time I walk on stage I believe I can win,” said Helaire. “I’m not arrogant about it. That’s the way I prepare myself.”
Helaire won the title on November 8, and flew out of New York, to Canada, for a photo shoot with his sponsor, Muscle Tech. Then it’s back home, where he looks forward to getting back to training his clients, and himself. “There’s never a day off,” says the disciplined Helaire.
This spring Helaire will again be the promoter for the Iron Eagle National Bodybuilding Classic at Savannah Country Day on March 21, 2009.
